Wednesday App Review: City 2048

City 2048

Despite my love of puzzle games I never really got into the whole 2048 craze that everyone else I know did. I mean, all those little tiles with numbers that you have to match together? No, thank you. It’s like Sudoku. Deep down, I know there is no real math involved, but half of me keeps expecting an equation to pop up at any point. It’s nervewracking. Fortunately, City 2048 features next to no numbers but does have a plethora of adorable little pastel city tiles. How could you say no to that? Based on, you guessed it, the popular game 2048 in which you match numbered tiles in an attempt to get to that magical number, this game instead involves matching city tiles to build a metropolis by combining two of the same tiles together to make a bigger building. The only numbers involved is your ‘population’ which is a handy way of letting you know how well (or terrible) you’re doing. Much like it’s numbered counterpart, City 2048 is partially luck, partially logic and completely addicting. It doesn’t really have any specific goal, other than to build as large of a city as possible. That’s literally all there is to it. For those of you who are better at these kinds of games than me, there is a really fun twist at level 13 which is definitely worth working towards. City 2048 is free to download for Android and iPhone and is ad-supported. However, the ads are set up as full-page ads between each attempt and are easy to dismiss. Personally, I don’t find them all that annoying which is nice. The game has zero in-app purchases and has very reasonable permissions. In short, if you’re looking for a simple to learn, challenging to master, and one that can be played whenever you have a few minutes to kill, then City 2048 is a great choice. The artwork is very well done and the game itself is a joy to play. So go on, see how big  of a city you can build!]]>
