Wednesday App Reviews: Piano Tile

The problem with playing famous songs like “Für Elise” and “Ode to Joy” on the piano is, well, it usually requires a piano, years of practice, lots hand-eye coordination, and time. Unless you have the app Piano Tiles, that is. Then all you need is a smartphone. Talk about simplicity. Piano Tiles, also called Don’t Tap The White Tile, is a simple tap-based game that is designed to test your hand-eye coordination and reflexes while letting you feel like you’re playing some pretty awesome tunes. It’s incredibly fun and a great time waster for when you’re standing in the line at the supermarket or otherwise have time to kill. Who needs productivity? Don't_Tap_the_White_Tile_screenshotYou might remember hearing people talk about this app last year, when it debuted and became pretty much THE top downloaded apps for several months in a row. Maybe you even played it yourself. But, whether you’re one of the millions who tried the original version or you were living under a rock and have no idea what I’m talking about, this app is definitely worth another look. Since its original release, Piano Tiles has undergone several changes including adding a bunch of new songs and fun challenges. While it’s not available on iPhone, my favorite version is Monroe, in which a little animated cat tries to distract you from the tiles. There is also a fun challenge called The Dress which is based on the blue/black/white/gold dress that was all over the internet a few weeks ago. Overall, there are about 12 Arcade+ modes, plus a Classic mode in which you try and tap through a specific number of black tiles as fast as you can, an Arcade mode where the screen scrolls and you are simply trying to keep up and get as many tiles as you can, and several others. The developers did a pretty good job of keeping things interesting despite how simple the concept really is. Additionally, the newer version of Piano Tiles is incredibly forgiving for those of you with clumsy fingers, and for each tile you tap, you are awarded a Note. Notes can be redeemed to continue after a mishap, and using them doesn’t count against your final score. There is no fast option to purchase them with money, and they actually accumulate pretty quickly, making the game 10x more enjoyable than the previous version, in my opinion. Oh, and it’s 100% free. That’s right—I have yet to find any paid add-ons for the Android version, and on iPhone, the only paid option is to remove ads. You can download the game for Android, Windows Phone or iPhone, but be aware that there are a lot of rip-offs of this version. Always go with the top one listed, and look for Cheetah Technology, Umoni or Clean Master Games as the developer. On Google Play, it’s actually listed as Don’t Tap The White Tile, while iPhone and Windows Phone users should search for Piano Tiles. If you’re looking for a good, fun app to waste a bit of time, then this app is definitely worth a look. Just don’t blame me if you get addicted to it! Happy tapping!]]>
