Virgin Mobile Offers Data Share

Virgin Mobile, a Sprint-owned MVNO, has been a powerhouse of industry firsts  in the past, and they continue that trend this week with the release of the first-ever prepaid data share plans. Available exclusively at Walmart starting last Saturday, these plans allow customers to share one bucket of data between two to four phone lines. The plans are currently only available on four phones, with additional phones expected to be added at the end of February. The four phones are: HTC Desire 510, LG Tribute, LG Volt and the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. There aren’t any indications as to which phones will be added in February. These new data-sharing plans are called “Data Done Right” and start at around $30 per line for unlimited talk, text and a data bucket that ranges, depending on how many lines you have. Here are the prices Virgin noted in their press release:
  • $65 (2 lines) – 4 GB shared data
  • $90 (3 lines) – 8 GB shared data
  • $115 (4 lines) – 12 GB shared data
I haven’t seen any specific mention of the expected speeds for data, but I expect it will be the same as with other Virgin plans. Virgin Mobile does state that video streaming ‘may be limited to 3G speeds.’ The data does not roll over, and once you run out of data for the month, you must either wait for it to renew or purchase additional data starting at $10 for 1 GB.]]>
