Tracfone Claim Deadline Next Week

In January, the FTC ordered America Movil companies to pay consumers who purchased “unlimited” data plans from 2009 – 2013. Companies that were part of this complaint include Tracfone, StraightTalk, Simple Mobile, Net10 and Telcel America, which were ordered to pay a combined $40 million to effected customers. However, the deadline to file a claim is fast approaching, and I wanted drop a quick reminder.
According to the website set up for this claim, The deadline for filing your online claim is June 19, 2015. Even if you are unsure if you qualify for the settlement, you should file a claim and the FTC will check your eligibility. You can learn more about the claim and your rights here.
During the four years in question, the unlimited plans from these companies did not include adequate information to let consumers know exactly how much data they were purchasing, and many customers were throttled or cut off after 1 – 3 GB. The real kicker is that the throttling had nothing to do with congestion and everything to do with profit. Unlimited data was sold at a set rate, and so these companies stood to make less profit if customers used more data.
“The issue here is simple: when you promise consumers ‘unlimited,’ that means unlimited,” Jessica Rich, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection told eCreditDaily right after the original decision. “This settlement means that Straight Talk, Net10, Simple Mobile, and Telcel America customers will be able to get money back from the company for services the company promised but didn’t deliver.”
