UK MVNO Announces Plans to Launch in US
January 20, 2015/
You might recall a few months ago, The People’s Operator (TPO), a UK based phone company, was raising money to launch their services here in the United States. Well, as it turns out, the campaign was a success and yesterday TeleoGraphy announced that TPO will be launching MVNO services here ‘in the spring.’
According to the brief article, TPO entered into an agreement with Sprint in April of 2014 and a commercial launch is ‘imminent’ as the company contemplates other areas of expansion beyond the US.
I haven’t seen any information on what kinds of plans the company intends to offer, but their current prepaid brand has extremely low rates and allows customers to donate 10% from each bill to a charity of their choosing while another 25% goes to the TPO Foundation. If the company continues the charity donations, they will join only two other mobile companies in the US that allow donations: GIV Mobile and Credo Mobile.
TPO was created by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales in 2012 and currently features a pay-as-you-go service as well as a monthly prepaid and traditional postpaid service. The company is currently only available in parts of the UK.
As always, I’ll keep an eye on proceedings and let you know when they launch!
