Virgin finds partner in India

It seems that Virgin Mobile never quits moving. First, they go public. Then they decide to offer postpaid service in Canada. Now, they’ll look to tap the Indian telecom market. This is a logical move for Richard Branson and his group. In our telecom travels, we’ve noticed that India, while not nearly at the telecom level of the U.S., is really starting to pick up steam. We see cell phone stories there every day that we used to see here, about two years ago. It doesn’t hurt that India is the world’s fastest growing telecom market. “We have a (telecoms) partner now, and I will reveal all in two months’ time,” Branson told reporters. The partnership with an Indian telecom is important, because of rules which stipulate that “[r]ules restrict foreign holdings in telecoms service providers to 74 percent, which means foreign firms need a local partner to offer services.” Forty-six domestic and foreign firms have applied to offer service in India. Interesting how Virgin Mobile is expanding. They have been operating in Australia now for some time, Optus which is Singtel has brought Virgin Mobile into the Optus group. Optus have made Virgin a low cost option in the same way Delta Air did with Song, a low cost option.
