Virgin to offer Android on $25 plan
Virgin Mobile announced the Samsung Intercept, its first Android-powered handset. Android is a powerful mobile OS, capable of major data usage. It would seem like a steal, then, to get unlimited messaging and data on that type of device for just $25 per month. Since Virgin charges an extra $10 for BlackBerry service, it seemed as though they might do the same for Android. But as PhoneNews.com notes, you’ll be able to get that unlimited service for the same $25 as you would any other non-BlackBerry handset. The price of the handset also makes the Intercept an attractive option. Most Android handsets cost $100 to $200 on contract, so they would cost much more on prepaid. But when the Intercept becomes available at Target store it will cost just $250. That means the two-year cost of ownership is $850 plus tax. Yet even that is a bit deceptive, since there is no obligation to use the handset for two years. That’s the beauty of prepaid. The Intercept should be available soon at Target stores. ]]>
How soon is “soon”? I cannot wait to ditch my overpriced contract plan!
I had tmobile for years and then switched to boost unlimited and it feels good to talk and not have to worry about minutes. haven’t looked back
Radio Shack has been carrying the Intercept for a few months since this article was posted. Bought one when my LG Rumor Touch drowned. Great to be liberated from VM, but still get unlimited data & 300 minutes dirt cheap. Nice to be able to use my own music for ringtones. Was able to download many of the jazz on my vinyl for free from MP3 Finder without having to hack my phone & use the full tracks (no need to cut or loop). Chose the Intercept over the Optimus because of the slideout keyboard. Glad I spent the extra $. Phone might look similar to the RTouch, but what a difference! Not locked down. Wi-Fi. Upgradeable over-the-air. Plenty of apps & widgets free or low-cost without having to get an iphone. Could go on, but I have a life…
