AT&T now offering SIM-only deal

announcement that they’d allow third-party phones and applications to be used on their network (though the phones still have to pass Verizon’s in-house muster). AT&T responded by saying that it has always allowed these kinds of devices on their network, so long as you had an AT&T SIM. Now they’ve taken it a step further, offering a SIM-only deal which allows you to keep your unlocked phone when you transfer to AT&T. When you really think about it, this isn’t a huge deal. It’s just AT&T coming to grips with the fact that people sometimes want to keep their old handsets. They’ve always allowed you to bring an unlocked phone on their network, so long as you dropped an AT&T SIM in it. Now they’re just offering the SIM a la carte. The card is 3G-ready with 64 K of memory, so you can hook up your nifty new device, too. They’re actually advertising this as a prepaid option. Per the website: “You can choose from Pay monthly and easy prepay GoPhone options with exclusive online rates and you can also bring your number with you.” Nice. It’ll cost you $10, though you can halve that if you sign a two-year contract. Something tells me that the contract is in no way worth it in this case. [AT&T Wireless] via [PhoneMag]]]>
