AT&T in on the cell phone backup plan

Last week, we shared that Virgin Mobile is making it easy to backup your cell phone content. AT&T has now jumped on the bandwagon, announcing their own contact backup plan. It’s nearly the same deal as Virgin: download software to your handset, and you can manage your contact list from the Internet.

Subscribers may add new contacts to their account and edit existing contacts on the AT&T Mobile Backup Web site at http://mobilebackup.att.com. Subscribers can also import contacts from Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo!(R) and AOL. Those new contacts can then be sent to the device over the wireless network.

The service is only available on a few select Motorola handsets at the moment, though of course they plan to make it available on more in the future. In addition to managing their own contacts, subscribers can import contacts from Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo, and AOL. Like Virgin, the service will cost $1.99 per month. Once again, we think that even $2 is steep for this service. It’s a glorified insurance policy, and we just can’t see most (responsible) people needing it more than once a year.
