Man behind Boost will now power Sprint 4G
Virgin Mobile, the company owned Boost Mobile. That was essentially Sprint’s prepaid division, as it had no self-branded prepaid service. Matt Carter headed Boost as it grew and stagnated over the years, and he was the man behind the $50 unlimited plan that shook the prepaid industry earlier this year. But, when Sprint acquired Virgin, there were some questions as to Carter’s role. Virgin CEO Dan Schulman was tapped to head Sprint’s prepaid division. So what about Carter? This week, we found out what Sprint has in mind. Earlier this week we learned that Sprint’s strategy involves hitting the top and the bottom of the cellular market. The bottom is prepaid, and that’s where Schulman will work. The top end is the company’s 4G WiMax network. Matt Carter will head the 4G division. That’s a big jump, of course, going from the low end to the high. But Sprint management has faith. It’s really not about the platform or the technology at all. It’s about Carter’s business savvy. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said that his company looks to Carter for his “executive and marketing skills to maximize Sprint’s industry leadership in 4G.” Given how well Boost marketed itself after the $50 unlimited plan — even if you didn’t like the Unwrong’d ads, they were effective — this faith certainly makes sense. The 4G division doesn’t interest us much, at least for this website’s purposes, so we wave goodbye to Matt Carter. It was interesting watching Boost evolve since this website launched. Hopefully he has similar success in 4G.]]>
