Cricket continues expansion

Leap Wireless will not rest in its pursuit to expand its coverage area. They also won’t let Metro’s substantial expansion bring them down. Yesterday, they announced that they’ve agreed to buy Hargray Communications Group Inc. Once the deal is complete, this will allow Cricket to enter markets in Savannah, Georgia, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. So we’re once again looking at areas not covered by MetroPCS. Is anyone else thinking this is a divide and conquer scheme? Or are we just beating a dead horse? Cricket recently launched service in Charleston, South Carolina, so this deal helps to expand the new coverage areas. The move was made in order to “avoid much of the cost associated with building a market from the ground up,” says CEO Doug Hutcheson. The transaction, valued at $30 million, is projected to close in the first half of 2008. There was no immediate estimate of how many subscribers Cricket would be acquiring from Hargray.
