Cricket SIMs Available at Walmart
December 12, 2014/
Cricket Wireless, the AT&T owned MVNO, is now available for purchase from Walmart stores and from walmart.com. You can purchase a SIM card kit for around $10 and I believe the kits will contain several different sizes of SIMs (mini, micro and nano) which will be compatible with different phones.
In order to use the SIM, you have to activate it on this site which does a pretty good job of walking you through the process. You’ll need to enter the SIM ID number (which can be found on the card) and your phone’s IMEI number. Then you’ll have to choose a rate plan and either port over your old number or be assigned a new number. When you choose a rate plan, you will have to go ahead and pay for your first month before you activate.
AT&T has really been expanding Cricket’s business model here recently, first with the introduction of Cricket Wireless phones inside of GameStop stores and now by offering SIMs and even phones at Walmart and walmart.com. You can, of course, still purchase SIM cards and phones from Cricket’s online or brick and mortar stores as well as select dealers nationwide.
It almost seems like they are taking more of a GoPhone model instead of a traditional carrier-style approach which may or may not help them. Personally, I feel like I am getting more value from a carrier-style business than from something that is mass marketed like GoPhone or Straight Talk.
