FreedomPop, Major Carrier in Talks
August 26, 2014/
Nearly a month after the merger talks between Sprint and T-Mobile concluded, Sprint MVNO FreedomPop is undergoing formal talks with an undisclosed ‘major carrier’ over a possible acquisition of the MVNO. Fierce Wireless reported yesterday that FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols had confirmed the acquisition talks, but declined to provide details other than that FreedomPop was seriously considering the offer.
Stokols also projected to Fierce Wireless that FreedomPop would be able to get 1 million subscribers by the end of 2015. The company currently has plans to launch their currently online-only business into retail stores by the end of the month and to have a presence in 1,700 Staples stores by the holidays. The company also has a distribution agreement with Fry’s Electronics and is working towards entering Europe and other markets as well.
“It’s growing, it continues to grow,” Stokols said of the MVNO’s business. “We’re starting to get into real scale.”
There is a lot of conjecture as to who is trying to purchase FreedomPop, with the most likely candidate being Sprint, as FreedomPopl already uses the yellow giant’s network. However, no official announcements have been made.]]>
