A step further in iPhone hacking
Boy, do we love phone hacking. Don’t you? There’s a certain level of power and satisfaction to be derived from sticking it to the man in any possible way. You want to lock my phone? Well, either I or someone else is smart enough to unlock it, so you can take your exclusive agreements and shove ’em where the sun don’t shine. This goes triply for the iPhone. We just can’t see the justification in locking such an expensive phone. If you paid $600 for a TV and couldn’t pick your service, you’d be livid. Well, we’re livid that you can’t even use your old AT&T SIM with the iPhone. That is, until now. So it’s not hacked to the point where you can head to another provider with it. However, you can now slip in your old AT&T SIM card, allowing you to keep the same service you’ve been using. The advantage to this is…well, we don’t exactly know. There’s no point in having an iPhone without data service, but, uh, you can have that now if you wish. However, we see this more as a sign of progress than of a useful innovation. We can’t be far off from a full hack. Of course, as has been said repeatedly, you will be very limited in your choice of providers. T-Mobile is the only other major carrier using a GSM network, so you’re stuck with them, regional providers, or a select handful of MVNOs. Still, it’s a moral victory more than anything. Plus, you can just wait until the CDMA SIM-equivalent cards hit the US. That’ll be the day. [Hack the iPhone] via [Slippery Brick]]]>
