iPhone Daily: How to unlock an iPhone

Okay, maybe you can’t do it yourself — well, you could, but we hear it’s exceedingly difficult, even for the most seasoned techie. But there are people out there who will unlock your iPhone — eventually. Yeah, we’re big teases. But it’s going to happen some time down the road. We’ll let Netly News tell you the story:

“So how long before you’ll be selling unlocked Apple Phones?” I asked the guy. He grimaced. “That’s going to be very difficult,” he said, claiming that some of his people had already gotten their hands on an Apple Phone and were attempting to hack it. Apple, needless to say, has gone to great lengths to make the phone hard to unlock; the back of the phone has to be opened, and the hardware process is tricky. The phone hacker sighed. “I think it will be a long time—maybe three months.”
So that’s the trick: find a kiosk that sells unlocked phones. The article says that this particular vendor usually charges $25 to unlock phones, but we’re going to assume it will be steeper for the iPhone. So as long as you’re on a GSM network — that is, not Verizon, Sprint, or any of their MVNOs — you might be able to use you an iPhone on your service. Be patient; we’ll be sure to let you know once someone hacks it. [Netly News]]]>

That is simply not true, you need to call and speak with someone else. The IMEI number will show them the original activation date on the AT&T network, from there they will know when the original contract expired. You might need to fax AT&T a purchase receipt showing you bought it used. AT&T isn’t making this easy for everyone, some hoops to jump through unfortunately.
