MetroPCS looking at TerreStar's spectrum assets
Cricket and MetroPCS, spectrum comes at a premium. They’ll look for additional spectrum wherever they can get it. It appears as though MetroPCS is going to get a bit creative. Earlier this year TerreStar, a company that provided hybrid satellite-cellular voice services, went bankrupt earlier this year. They ow roughly a billion dollars to creditors, so acquiring their assets might involve a bit of an outlay, or at least a partnership. Still, MetroPCS wants that spectrum. According to The Wall Street Journal, they’ve been inquiring about the assets. We don’t know much more, since neither company has responded to a request for comment. The auction will happen in early 2011, and it would be quite a nice acquisition for MetroPCS. Via Phone Scoop.]]>
It’ll be wonderful if MPCS get’s more spectrum, and starts focusing also on the lower scal phone users as opposed to only the high-end users that gobble most of the available bandwidth. Only tracfone so far has been able to really be competitive in this particular market, and is on the verge of having an outright monopoly of the said market. I love tracfone for being there (for more than a decade now), but they need some competition.
