Yes, there will be free Wi-Fi for MetroPCS

MetroPCS pre-loading Boingo on Android phones, we missed something. It wasn’t in the press release, and it’s my fault for not following up. It seemed pretty straight forward, but there’s a bit more to it than the original story contained. Thanks to TG Daily for providing some clarification. This actually makes the announcement a lot cooler, since it involves free Wi-Fi. The real interesting part of the announcement — the part that Boingo left out — was that MetroPCS is installing software, from Devecescape, on their handsets. This software detects Wi-Fi hotspots and automatically connects. That means faster internet for the user. This is where Boingo comes in. Apparently, not all of Boingo’s hotspots require a monthly fee. There are ones that are paid for by the establishment. These aren’t included in the 200,000 number we cited yesterday. There are others, such as in coffee shops and other social places, where you can connect for free. So not only will your MetroPCS phone be able to access those free hotspots, but it will switch to them seamlessly. The information above definitely makes this a more exciting announcement. I’m just sorry I didn’t get to it yesterday. ]]>
