Another option for senior cell users

Jitterbug and their outrageous 50-cents-per-minute rate, I’ve been hoping that an alternative phone would come out for senior callers. Yeah, Verizon has the Coup, which has special plans attached to it. Still, there’s room for competition. Verizon’s plan provides too many minutes for emergency-only callers, and too few minutes for grandparents who want to talk to their grandchildren. We might be seeing some competition down the road, though, as Clarity has announced an elderly-friendly phone. Like the Coup, it will feature larger calling buttons, plus four large buttons on the outside of the slider phone. The screen is large, with magnified text display for easy reading. Plus, the incoming voice signal is amplified for the hearing-imparied. What’s a little strange is what Clarity has in place of a 911 button, which is present on the Jitterbug phone. Clarity’s button cycles through five phone numbers until someone picks up. So are they the ones that would then call 911? It seems like just adding another step — though it presumably will cut down on unnecessary 911 calls. The phone likely won’t see widespread release, only through special channels. As of now, there is no official price, nor is there a carrier set. However, since it’s a GSM phone, we can count on AT&T or T-Mobile.]]>

I have seen the Coup and the Jitterbug. I have yet to find what is better about Coup than the Jitterbug, except maybe that it was named after an expensive car. Like car, like phone, right?
I hope that this new phone is just as useful as Jitterbug. Looking at Jitterbug site: http://www.jitterbug.com/?utm_source=AARP%2BBlog&utm_medium=Media&utm_campaign=AARP%2BBC
there are different plans. When Seniors are not talking on the phone nearly as much as everyone else, what does it matter that the rate is a little higher; at least the ease of use more than makes up for it.

I just posted a reply on the the first blog as well. I don’t know why people are bashing Jitterbug as expensive – my mom’s plan is only $30 a month and she gets 150 minutes. That’s only 20 cents each, not 50 cents. The customer service has so far been great – they all speak english! So far so good, and we’re about 4 months in with the Jitterbug.

I agree with Amber the jitterbug phone is very easy.
I have the 30 a month and 150min. That is not .50 a minute do the math.
