Touchscreen? Bah. The real future of keypads
August 28, 2007/
Of course, nothing in the future is guaranteed. But after taking a look at this concept phone, we’ve come away impressed. Actually, it’s not about the phone itself. Rather, it’s about the keypad attached to the phone. Instead of the traditional mechanical keyboard, this phone has a series of mountains and valleys that allow a user to easily navigate the 12 main buttons, as well as the send, end, and menu options. While we do consider the concept neat, we have to wonder about its functionality. Where is the utility in this design? How does it improve on the current design? You still have to press buttons for it to work — having it be touch-sensitive would defeat the purpose of the mountains and valleys. The only purpose we see is that the phone could be navigated without actually looking at it. This is a bad thing. When do people need to use their keypad while not looking at it? Yes, while driving. We can only imagine the accidents this might cause. We might sound cynical, but we’ve seen far too many near-accidents where one person was on a cell phone. Still, A+ for neatness. Now, if we can just figure out a practical use for it. [Into Mobile]]]>
