T-Mobile not going anywhere, says chief exec
There’s a ton of movement in the wireless world today. Just between the Alltel buyout and the Amp’d bankruptcy, we’ve had a busy month or so. Of course, action inspires further action. What’s next? Rumors have been swirling that T-Mobile is in play. They’re owned by Deutsche Telekom, which as you probably could have guessed, is a German telecommunications company. Surely, selling off the American entity would reap large profits for the company. However, CEO Rene Obermann rebuffs that notion. Since T-Mobile is one of the stronger assets of the company, he feels that selling it off would make them weaker. It’s part of the age-old strategy of enhancing your strengths and then covering up your weaknesses. Duetsche Tekelom’s weaknesses? Developing markets. However, Obermann doesn’t think it’s glaring enough a weakness to consider right now. After all, they’re firmly entrenched in both German and American telecommunications (T-Mobile has 26 million US subscribers). There are two things to remember with this report. First, a CEO would never tip his hand. Obermann could very well have plans to sell T-Mobile, but he doesn’t want to let that on. Second, it’s based on the recent wireless movement. Things are happening. And when things happen, rumors surface, founded or unfounded. We’ll keep an eye on it. [Telecommunications Industry News]]]>
