Get an Android G1 without a contract

The biggest news in phones over the past few weeks has been the first Android-powered phone. It was just released this week through T-Mobile, and demand has been through the roof. In most areas, at least. Word is that T-Mo employees have been instructed to sell no G1 without a two-year contract and data plan. So how do you get this puppy on prepaid? Android Community gives us a little insight. The first, and most difficult, part of this procedure is to find a store that actually has a number of G1 units laying around. Many are sold out, and many more have limited supplies. You’ll have to find a store with a surplus, like the guys at Love For Biz did. Then you’ll need to take it home and call a friend with an active T-Mobile SIM. Inset that SIM, go to the setup screen. You’ll then link it to any Gmail address. You then enable WiFi and connect to the nearest network. Apparently, at that point you can unsync the email address. You can then insert the unactivated SIM which came with the G1, or you can then insert a prepaid SIM card, which is what we’re going for here. So, knowing that it’s possible, is anyone going to rush out and get one of these?]]>

This will work with an unlocked G1 in the UK, but not in the US because T-mobile have no prepaid data in the UK. This means that the G1 will work in the US on prepaid, but any smartphone features like email and internet access will not.
You need a contract for that.
    Wish my G1 worked!
