Virgin Mobile offers pink slip protection

announced a cheaper unlimited calling plan, they also made it easier on individuals who get laid off. Even though it’s a prepaid service and the inability to pay normally means not having service, Virgin will pick up up to three months’ tab for any individual laid off. There are, of course, conditions to the offer, and it does require specific enrollment. More details after the jump. Specifically, customers need be with Virgin for two consecutive months, and must be eligible for state unemployment benefits. That’s sad for the unemployed who don’t qualify for benefits, but it’s certainly better than nothing. The offer will last for the next year, and current customers have until June 30 to enroll. New customers can sign up when they pick a new plan.

“With the unemployment rate rising, the fear of job loss or salary reductions have made consumers watch every dollar,” [CEO Dan] Schulman said. “These issues tend to impact our prepaid base more than many wireless users, so we hope this program can offer some peace of mind to our customers.”
It’s especially nice that this is coming from a prepaid carrier. ]]>

Virgin Mobile is filled with bureaucracy and I will be very surprised if they end up providing any credit at all. They have a history of bad customer support and gimmicky rate plans. If you want more of the Naked Truth, check out Naked Wireless.

I’ve been a Virgin Mobile user for years. I am a low income college student. I heard that Virgin is coming out with a reduced fee for the unemployed plan. FOR THE UNEMPLOYED. Does that mean that because I have a job (no matter how much I need the reduced fee), I don’t qualify for this plan? Real nice, Virgin!
