Jump Mobile Prepaid Cell Phone Service
Editor Rating
Overview
Jump Mobile, a San Diego based wireless service provider, is a subsidiary of Leap Wireless International, Inc., which also owns Cricket mobile.
It was founded in 2005 as Leap's prepaid division, and is currently available in 22 states. It mainly targets the youth audience, but its rates appeal to a broader range of people.
Pros: Their big selling point is free incoming calls and free text messaging, both incoming and outgoing. The per-minute rate is low. They have two-tier dialing for roaming calls, so it's always clear whether you are making local and roaming calls.
Cons: After leaving your local calling area, the rates skyrocket. Phone selection is very thin.
Detailed Provider Information
Plans: Jump prepaid offers a pay-as-you-go service where you add dollars, not minutes, to your account. This money is deducted when making calls or roaming. When in the local service area, the rate is 10 cents per minute for outgoing calls. Incoming calls are free. That jumps to 69 cents per minute for both incoming and outgoing calls when outside the local calling area. Text messaging is free when within the local calling area, but becomes 10 cents per minute outside of it.
Customer Service: Customer service is available via a toll free number.
Credit Check: None
Contract: None
Payment Options: Jump Mobile airtime can be paid for by credit card on the website or through the customer service line. Cash purchases can be made at an authorized Jump Mobile dealer.
Text and Picture Messaging: Incoming and outgoing text messages are free with the local calling area, and 10 cents for both incoming and outgoing messages outside the local calling area. Picture messaging is not available. Jump also offers international text messaging as low as 10 cents per minute.
Data Plans: There is no mobile web available with Jump at this time. However, certain information services may be available through Jump Downloads (explained below).
Downloadables: The Jump Downloads service is available for a one-time five dollar fee. Afterwards, ringtones, wallpaper, games, and other information and entertainment programs are available for varying fees.
International Calling: International calling is available to select countries for as little as 10 cents per minute in addition to standard airtime rates.
Roaming Charges: Roaming calls outside of the Jump prepaid network are charged at 69 cents per minute for incoming and outgoing calls. Anything outside the user's local calling area is considered roaming.
Calling Features: Voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, and 3 way calling are all included with service plans.
Activation Fee: None
Nationwide Long Distance: With Jump prepaid, long distance is Included in the plan. It is billed as any call (10 cents per minute within the local calling area, 69 cents per minute outside the local calling area).
411 Calls: Jump Mobile offers directory assistance for a fee. However, that fee is not specified on the website, and since we couldn't reach a customer service rep, we couldn't find out.
Earliest Minute Expiration: There are four tiers to minute expiration. When purchasing 10 dollars of airtime, it expires after seven days. When purchasing 20 dollars, it expires after 15 days. A 30 dollar purchase expires after 30 days. A 50 dollar purchase expires after 90 days.
911 Calls: Yes
Phones: There is a very limited number of phones currently available through Jump Mobile. They are only offering two of them through their website (listed below). Thankfully, they are at two distinct price points: $69.99 and $149.99. So while the selection is thin, the two phones fall into two difference price categories.

an unhappy customer |
i think that jump mobile offers good service but provides poor service and customer service. i have had ongoing issues with no having the voicemail feature available for over a week now. no one has gotten back in contact with me and now for the past 3 days all cust serv reps are busy with no option of holding for the next available agent. it is obvious that customer service is not a priority to JUMP MOBILE and i regret having them for service. convenient but not accountable

BEST plan for a school kid that does not travel (so no roaming change), that uses outgoing calls infrequently. Incomming FREE and all text messages FREE. I buy $50 at a time so that minutes last 3 months... That comes out to less than $17 per month. There is NOTHING cheaper!

I switched from Cricket to Jump, as I made very few calls per month, and didn't need to pay $50 per mo for unlimited minutes. I used to $50 prepay, good for 3 MONTHS, and other than the loss of picture msg., there is no difference in service, in fact, the Cricket recordings are what you hear when a customer is unavailable, or out of area. This plan is less than $20/mo, and even if you fail to add minutes before running out, you have an additional 60 days to reload, without losing your number, and no service charge, late fee or re-activation fees, like cricket!

I have trying to get hold of customer service for a week. They are ALWAYS helping another customer. One time I called early in the morning and a recording said the customer service hours are 7:00am to 11:00am Central time. Still trying and no answer. Can't even email them. TERRIBLE!!! Had the phone for 4 days when it quit working. That was AFTER I loaded $50 minutes on the phone.

I have a jump phone ,I also brought my daughter one. I wish I never did it the customer sevrice is rude the hold time is forever. They cut your phone off when they feel like even if you have minutes. For instant I had 50.00 on my account they cut my phone off. when I call them the ladie argue me down. when put the money down I already had minutes on the account previous. I call on 1/27/08 she told she could only give me a month or util 3/4/08 I got tired of debating with her so I agreed. Today 2/6/08 my phone is off again. Same thing happen again had to debate with another lady she say will give tell 2/29/08 after she put me on hold for a hour from 3:30 - 4:30. I said listen I have no need to lie to you. My service has been interupted a number of times because of your company computer error. The last two time it seem like their making me out to be lier. I said im being ripe off. I told her look I already acepted March 4. Im still losing. then she ok but dont pay with your credit card anymore buy the slips at the store what kind of garabage is that. If any one gets jump moble keep your reciept tell your minutes expire and never double up on payments they will try to ripe you off.

I have had jump mobile for about 2 years now and still think its the best value in prepaid hands down. The calling aream is pretty small and every once and a while I have a problem with missing calls, but for the most part, all good. I had the utstarcomm phone for about 2 years and it was and is a great phone. I just bought a flashed Samsung a950 that was originally a verizon phone. Flash was successful and number transfer was flawless. Only thing that sucked was a 15 dollar fee for transferring. But still, as I said, Good stuff.

The computer makes alot of errors. My service has been interrupted a couple of times. Customer service can not resolve the issues. My minutes and days don't gel. Then no service without notice. The customer service act as if I am lying. I do like the service however I don't trust the computer. *729 is not accurate.

So,,, I had a second Cricket line that was not using many minutes but was still costing the basic service. I decided to cancell and explained why to the cricket person when I called to cancel. I told her I was thinking of a Go phone and she suggested I transfer the second line (my daughters) to a jump phone. She took care of it for me right there. "HOWEVER" when I call my daughter I get the voice mail of somebody else and am not able to reach my daughter,,, She can call out but no one can call in. There is a help line but guess what?? there is NOBODY at the end of the other line. When prompted to enter the phone number it replies this number is invalid,, yet it did'nt have any problem taking my money for hook up and buying minutes. After trying for about two or more hours I have found there is NO customer service and it does no good to talk to Cricket because they just send you to the same number over and over where there is no help. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY and time

no jump for me |
Jump is just another part of Leap wireless. They are connected with Cricket. They have awful service. They have a way of eating up the minutes and charging outrageous amounts. I rather have Cricket's nasty service, at least i can call out. I guess this works for some, but not for me.

If you have a jump mobile all you need to do is purchase a cricket phone and call customer service to do an ESN switch to switch service to the cricket phone for only $15. It works with all cricket phones and if you switch to a camera phone you will be able to send pictures and sounds at no additional cost. Jump mobile has been great for me. Only problem is customer service representatives cannot speak fluent english and are very hard to understand.
