Wednesday App Review: Cow Evolution

This week, I unleashed mutant cows on the universe, and I have no regrets. They’ve tromped on forests and bounced around cities; there are even green cows on Mars, thanks to me. I have to admit, though, those cows are actually a little weird and I am not sure how I feel about it. The mutant earthling cows though? All me. And while I took a couple of Ag classes in high school, I admit my animal husbandry isn’t really all that great. Fortunately, the app Cow Evolution, created by Tapps Games, does all of the complex cow mating and genetics for me. All that is required is dragging two cows of the same type together, then POOF: a new, larger mutant cow appears! It’s like magic! Or probably science. Who knows. All I know is that there are mutant cows everywhere, and I’m totally okay with it. Now I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of tap-style games. Generally they just seem like total time wasters and I don’t generally have enough time to waste. I actually only downloaded this game because I was bored while waiting for an oil change; I didn’t actually think I would like it and had no intentions of doing a review on such a pointless game. But here I am, with an army of mutant cows, telling you that Cow Evolution is actually pretty awesome. coevopooLiterally all you have to do in this simple game is combine cows in order to make larger and more unusual cows. The more cows you combine, the bigger they get and the more coins they generate. And how do they generate these coins? Well, they poop, and you automatically collect it and somehow it magically translates to currency. I guess this world has a lot of farmers needing fertilizer or something. I’m not really sure, but it works. The goal of the game is to get your cows to expand to the universe and become enlightened or maybe even godly. I haven’t got that far yet, but I’m pretty excited. cowevoAccording to the developer, there are actually several different ‘endings’ to the game, depending on how you as a player progressed. There are several different universes that you can end up in, as well as the ability to expand to Mars by donating your cows to a friendly purple martian in exchange for rubies. The martian cows hatch from eggs and are a kind of weird shade of light green. Instead of coins, these cows generate rubies and take a lot longer to upgrade. This is the section of the game where the developers expect you to use mini-transactions to purchase more rubies to upgrade your martian cows faster. However, spending money in game is completely unnecessary if you don’t mind things being a little slow going on the red planet. The game is completely free and there are actually several similar games including Platypus Evolution, Goat Evolution and Giraffe Evolution available. Once I get a few more mutant cows out into the universe, I think I might move on to giraffes. While the game does have plenty of options to purchase upgrades and cow hats with real money (via Diamonds), these purchases are not necessary in the slightest, and you will accumulate diamonds on occasion as you open more cow crates. Make sure you buy a tractor asap so you can build up coins while you’re away. You can download Cow Evolution for iOS, Android, Windows Phone or via the Amazon App Store. And let me tell you, if you’re looking for a mindless and fun game to just pass some time, then I highly recommend this fun game. The animation is very simple and kind of cute, and it’s a blast. The mutant cows are coming, so you might as well choose right side!]]>
