NO STARS AT ALL. Incident Purchased a Straight Talk phone from Walmart. Bought airtime for phone from Walmart. Opened up the phone, put battery in, turned on. The box that the phone came in indicated that the phone had to be ‘activated' by going online to strighttalk.com. Went there to activate the phone. Website asked for the activation code on the airtime card. I entered the activation code. Website told me that I put in wrong code. Did that again online, same thing. SO I took the phone and airtime card back to Walmart and returned it for another Straight Talk phone. This time I paid for airtime online at the straight talk website. After going through series of questions regarding the identification of the phone, the website told me to dial certain numbers on the phone keypad and the phone would be activated. After doing this, the display on the phone said that the phone could not be activated at this time, and to try after 2 hours. 2 hours past, and I did the same thing again. Same thing happened. SO I called customer service at straight talk. I was actually told to ‘take the battery out and put it back in again, then turn on the phone' (standard customer service programmed response to any problem) That did not work. I was then told to repeat the instructions to ‘dial certain numbers on the phone keypad and the phone would be activated' which did not work. The customer service ‘person' kept telling me to do that over and over until finally I had to put an end to it. In other words, each time that that process would fail, she would tell me to do those steps again. Finally I had to step in, and refuse to do that any more as it was obviously useless. She told me to ‘wait up to 24 hours' and then ‘try it again'. I said no. I told her to just refund the money I spent on the airtime, and I would take the phone back to Walmart where they will refund the money for the actual useless phone. She told me that there is no refund for the airtime. I told her that yes there is, and that you can't just scam people out of their money legally and then have no liability for it. She wasn't hearing all that. She kept saying that there's no refund for the airtime. I told her that I was going to call the police if they did not return the money they stole under false and deceptive pretences. She said ‘there's no refund for airtime'. Damage Resulting I've had to contact my bank, and report the sale as being an internet fraud scheme, and dispute the charges on those bases. The bank has given me back the money, and filed a charge back to Straight Talk. I just want everyone to know about this scam.

I like the rates and phone prices, but hate the fact that you can't order ringtones on the website. Every time I've tried, I've been told by the site that there is a problem with the account and to go to customer service. The site sent me the same message when I tried to preview one of the ringtones. So, if you want cheap prepaid with basic features,it's a good deal, otherwise save your money !!

I've had ST for two months now. I don't have much to complain about the phone itself, coverage area, or internet service. However don't go to their website and order graphics or ringtones. I ordered 2 ring tones and 2 graphics and never received them. Paid over ten bucks for them. After being ‘escalated to the highest level' (I have no idea what this means, they made it sound like it's some kind of Homeland security terrorist alert) over a course of two weeks and being promised a full refund three different times, I gave up. Never received tones or graphics, Never received refund. Customer service is a joke and speaks with a very hard to understand ‘Asian-English Language' dialect. Cheap Phones + Cheap Service + Third World Country CS Reps. = Cheap Customer Service. Has any one else had this problem? If so, and if your experience was much more positive then please share your secret.

If you use up all your minutes before the month is up, and you buy a new card, does the start time of the next month start the day you activate your newest card or does it stay the same expiration date from the previous card?

Considering ST but I have a question. I've been with tracfone for quite a few years and I don't get coverage where I live. My question is should I list a different zip code when activating the new phone as I read somewhere that it does make a difference. Also is there a difference in the set up of the phones purchased at Walmart vs. the ST website? Thanks

I love ST. My wife and both bought one and the people at walmart set them up free of charge in about 20 minutes for the two. The reception is way better than at &t, and I live live in Las Vegas. There isn't a place here that doesn't get good reception.

I was a VerizonWireless customer for almost 20 years before switching to Straight Talk about a month ago. So far, I'm happy with the service, which mirros that of Verizon. The quality of the phone I puchased is not a good as any of the Verizon phones I used over the years, but it works and the service is realiable. Plus, ST offers 911 and 411 at no cost. Page Plus, another service I'm considering, offers neither. Straight Talk customer service can be frustrating, as most of the CS reps speak English as a second language. Sometimes it's difficult to make yourself understood, sometimes difficult to understand what the CS rep is saying. Still, being patient and respectful can usually overcome those problems. The best thing about ST is the one Verizon aspect that it doesn't have–a contact. If a company offers good service and competitive pricing, it doesn't need a contract to keep its customers. In my area of the country, AT &T and Sprint offer very poor coverage–you may or may not be able to place or receive a call. Verizon has great coverage. So does Straight Talk. I recently made a 75-mile trip through mostly rural areas while using my Straight Talk phone on one continuous call. My call was never dropped. While a Verizon customer, I placed and received calls while standing atop Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii, while standing at the US/Mexican border at Nogales AZ/Mexico, standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon, and many other places. I expect that Straight Talk will offer similar performance. I highly recommend at least trying this service, and I suspect that most people will be happy that they did.

Seems as if I have found the phone company I am looking for. Currently have Verizon. Contract is up so I can move any time. I have a family plan but know that I will need to get two ‘new' plans. My question is, can I just continue to use the phone my husband has or do I have to change and get a new one? Reason is, he's technically disadvantaged and I will have to move all of his numbers so it would be so much easier if I could leave it alone. Also, we could keep our current numbers, right?

Uh folks, please be advised that Straight Talk is piggy-backing off Verizon's service, so what we are getting is actually Verizon's service in Trac Phone mode. My friend and I dumped our Alltel contract, and I had some minutes left on my Verizon non-contract phone. He purchased a ST phone and I called him mid-day during a weekday peak hour, and the voice prompt told me I had unlimited minutes to speak to him. Also, another told me here in IL that she called her aunt in Georgia and her caller ID box on her home phone IDed the number as a Verizon number. So it's all good!

I am quite skeptical about this company. I am looking to purchase the $30 plan and the Samsung Finesse touch screen. I am wondering about the ‘no roaming' thing. I would travel around from city to city or out of state, but not all the time. Does it mean I would not be able to chat or text if I left my home city? This ‘no roaming' thing is the only thing holding me back. Would I be able to use the phone as long as I am in Verizon's coverage area? I live in Melbourne, Florida.

Straight Talk is the best prepaid plan that I've come across. I use the $45 unlimited texts and calls plan and get great coverage with it being on the Verizon network. I've recently been doing alot of my shopping at Walmart so it was convenient that Straight Talk is sold exclusively nationwide there. The best part about this plan… is by switching to it from my monthly contract, I will be saving over $500 a year!!! Straight Talk is simply PERFECT 🙂

So far – so good. I ordered 2 phones from Walmart.com and had them shipped to the store for free – I recommend this rather than ordering from straight talk – if there is a problem, you can return them to the store within 30 days – just keep your original boxes and receipt. I activated both phones and ported 2 numbers from AT &T – the phones were active within 5 minutes. I have gotten great reception. In areas where AT &T had no signal, I have had 3 to 5 bars. The web is not 3G speed but I have had no problems navigating to any sites – it is still pretty quick. I have the R451C and love it. I am starting with the $30.00 plan and customer service was able to remove the message which states the time you have remaining prior to each call. The agent I got spoke good English and was able to help me quickly. We will see what the future holds – but looking good for now.

I just had to write and put in my input. With all the bad reviews i was nervous but i took the plunge on Sat. I bought the slider and the $45 card. Came home and called in to turn the phone on and it was all computerized. No problem there then i had to wait 5 min and call from the new phone to have it activated. I never once spoke to a person and never had a problem. I had Verizon and was paying $75 a month for 700 min. and unlimited texts. I have so much better reception with this phone! I do have one question does anyone know how to upload pics taken from the phone to the computer?

Just picked up a Samsung R451C. LOVE this phone, took about 10 minutes to activate it, then another 5 minutes for the internet to become functional. I've been sending texts all afternoon, as well as downloading ringtones and wallpapers from www.mytinyphone.com. The directions listed by Dolphin and Joanna work like a charm. I'm very happy so far and have good coverage in my backwoods little town. So far, so good. I hope it continues to impress me.

Ok I am still waiting. I have been waiting since dec 13. They sent 5 port requests each time they put in the wrong information. They keep telling me 24 more hrs. We will call you tomorrow and no call. They know how I feel . I don't think they do. I have never seen anything like it. I have contacted the FCC and the bbb. I think I might contact the news. If my Internet doesn't work when I get this working I will scream. That's if I keep the phone after all of this I might try boost mobile and go American what's 5more dollars. At least when I call I can understand them. 35 days and still no phone.

I just moved into my first apartment and I didn't have the money to keep up with my AT &T bill – and then a friend let me know about Straight Talk. I was extremely skeptical about buying a phone/plan from Walmart, but I have been proven wrong. The $45 a month unlimited plan is prefect for me and anyone who wants unlimited calling, texts, and internet without a contract. I simply charge up for the month and keep in touch with my family. The selection of phones is great and I was even able to keep my phone number. What's even better is that Straight Talk operates on the Verizon network and has the best coverage I've ever had in Miami. I was paying nearly $90 a month for the same type of plan with AT &T and now I'm saving nearly $50 a month without a contract. The cancellation fees are worth every penny with Straight Talk. Don't let the negative reviews or Walmart scare you away – I wouldn't go back.

Great phone service, quality of call and coverage is great. I read all the bad comments about the costumer service, and I really don't know what is wrong with some people. ST costumer service is as good as any other company. The thing with reviews is that the ones that write reviews are usually the ones that had a bad experience, but for one unhappy client I'm sure there is at least 100 happy customers. Keep that in mind and try ST and see for yourself if ST is right for you. Besides there is no contract and they have phones for as little as 29.99

So, it's officially been a month with no issues since the switch from Verizon to ST. Today I went to Walmart, purchased another unlimited card for $45, and activated it online without a hitch. I have the Samsung R451 and love it. I ordered a skin from skinit.com and it fits like a charm. I'm so happy that others are enjoying the same service and experience with ST. Yes, I was apprehensive a month ago when I read some negative reviews. Yet, I'm so glad I took the risk and it paid off big time.

I bought the lg 220c for a test run, i activated it online but for some reason it didn't work. i read awful reviews of their costumer service so i was nervous about calling and getting help, but i did and in 5 minutes the guy had me all set to go!! he was friendly and easy to work with! sure it was hard to understand him alot but he sure did get the job done! so i used this test run for about a week and then decided that it was worth the switch from cricket. i have been a cricket costumer for almost 4 years now so you know straight talk is doing something right! i tried to switch my number over online but since i hadn't used the entire 30 days of service on my straight talk phone it wouldn't let me port my number. so nervously i called in again to fix my problem. i was on the phone with them for 31 minutes and 47 seconds. these guys really stuck with me to try to fix the problems, and there was no confusion of any kind. he also made it sound like it would take years for the port process to be completed but it took about 10 minutes and i was all set to go! everything works including my web!!! i couldn't be happier, this company is incredible and i recommend them 100%. my word of advice is don't fear the CS, cause i think they've stepped up their game a lil since all the complaints.

I don't know if I was just lucky, but… I called customer service 5 different times. The first 3 times it was busy, then I reached customer service twice, and got an American both times – it was during the week though. They were very nice and helpful – did have a canned goodbye line, but the rest of the convo. was fine. They did tell me that the porting time depends on when the service you are currently with responds and releases the number. It could be as little as 4 minutes to as long as 7 days. There's only so much you can do if the other company is not cooperative – they are probably not happy that ST is taking so many customers away. Hopefully I'll be as lucky in the future. God bless!

I have to admit that I was a little concerned with whether I should try the Straight Talk program after reading so many negative reviews concerning the customer service but my experience thus far (2 days) has been positive. I purchased the LG220cm at the local Wal Mart and a $45 card. I followed the instructions on the activation card included with the phone and ported my telephone number from Verizon. I used the website for my activation activities and within 2 hours my number had been transferred and my new phone was operational. I am not really a power user, never use texts (yet) but I have begun to explore the mobile web applications which will take some getting used to. I have had no issues as yet with coverage traveling through the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York. There are small dead spots but with our hills that is not unusual. One of the features that attracted me was the prevalent notice that Straight Talk uses the Verizon network of towers.

Well, I was on my way to get a phone, and get set up when I talked with a different Walmart rep. who told me that you do not get the same coverage as regular Verizon customers (the opposite was said at the other Wally world location). You only have coverage on the Verizon towers. The towers shared with Verizon that belong to Sprint do not provide coverage to ST phones. So, if you are traveling to Lake Havasu City, Bullhead, or Kingman, AZ, you will not have any coverage what so ever. I called ST, and they did confirm this. Oh well, maybe they'll have the coverage I need in a few years. I'm glad I found this out first.

To M. How dare you put down people in third world countries. The fact is because their cost of living is lower than ours, they accept a lower salary, therefore companies like Tracfone/Verizon/Walmart contract their work outside of the US so people like us can have unlimited for $45 per month. If you want an American accent for CS, then you will have to pay a lot more than $45 per month and go with another company. Have you donated your money to the people of Haiti yet? Perhaps all of us who are now saving money with ST can send the difference to Haiti. To Dolphin, you're very welcome!

Star rating unknown as yet. Considering buying Straight Talk. Have had the same Tracfone for 9 years, time for something new??? lol. Tracfone customer service is the WORST, pray you never have to call them. To change my phone number last week, it ate up 90 mins and 4 calls before they got it right. Number listed IN my phone is incorrect and they tell me to call back (and eat up more mins.) and they will see if they can get the right number entered, forget it, I will just remember the number. Talked with 4 different people, extremely hard to understand, and bad background noise, lots of ‘please hold until I talk with my supervisor' stuff. The first number they gave me already belonged to someone and she was not happy when I called from another phone to see if mine was working. My (Motorola)Tracfone has worked perfectly for 9 years. I will keep it active until the battery finally gives up. And hope a new Straight Talk phone works well too.

I would like to get the Samsung Finesse phone and the $30 plan because I would like to text a lot, but I don't want to pay an extra $15 for unlimited texting. With that phone, when and where does it tell you how many minutes and texts you have left? Right before or after you call or text? I noticed they don't have roaming, which really stinks. How far will it work in your home area before the service stops? I live in Melbourne, Florida. I read somewhere that people were able to ‘roam' and it worked. Have any of you been able to do that? Is it worth getting. I don't travel a lot but when I do, I would like to bring my phone with me. So would it work if let's say I got to Orlando? Any help is greatly appreciated.

So I just read above that ‘Roaming Charges: There are no roaming charges, because the phone will not work off-network.' I know that Straight Talk uses Verizon's network. Does that mean that as long as you are in Verizon's coverage, the phone will be able to make calls and text?

Absolutely the WORST customer service. The Phillipine call center skill does not go beyond reading the same canned response over and over again. My 4 hours of experience with a host of incompetent call service reps.

Just ported over yesterday from t-mobile. It took 15 minutes!! the phone and the reception is wonderful. It seems most of the complaints are about ‘downloading ringtones.' Really, how important is that? You people really live charmed lives if that's your biggest problem.

Yesterday I bought the Samsung R451 and a card for a month of service. Seemed like the best deal. However, I followed the instructions to activate it by calling the referenced number in the package with no success. The options didn't apply to activating the phone. So, I tried to activate it using the straighttalk.com site, I was again unsuccessful. It says the phone is active and the service plan is being processed. It's been 12 hours and I can't make a phone call.

Your on the Verizon network, ask any idiot on Verizon how much THEY pay for unlimited talk, text and dats, its a joke. Granted the phones arent the greatest, but they do the job, im sure down the road better phones will become available. And to all those people who complain about having problems downloading ringtons..ITS A PHONE!!! go buy an IPOD

Stop! Don't do it. I have been trying to port my landline # for 30 days yes 30 days. They just told me to wait another 7 – 10 days for the 4th time. They keep entering the wrong acct # so my current company can't release the #. Then they try to blame my landline carrier. You can't understand what they are saying. They made me call to get the # for my landline port department, shouldn't they already know it? If If I could change my # I would have. Once I get my # ported I will be selling my phone on ebay and going with an American company it will be worth the extra $$.

Warning: I bought my Straight Talk phone in November/2009. When I called to activate my phone, I was connected to a Customer Service Call Center in Guatemala…yes, a third (3rd) world country. Then the Customer Service representative transferred me to another Customer Service Call Center; but, this time in Columbia. Yes, another third (3rd) world country. I have had to call Customer Service two (2) more times and the Call Centers have been located in the Philippines. My biggest complaint WAS: Why are all the Customer Service Call Centers located in third (3rd) world countries? Now, however, I am being contacted by telemarketers calling from the Philippines. I have told them NOT to call me again…EVER. I have never had this happen to me before using other wireless services. Just before the telemarketing calls began, my telephone conversations became hard to hear. It seemed as if someone was listening in/cutting in. I am going to contact Straight Talk immediately. I sincerely hope our personal information is NOT being sold to the highest bidder.

The phone works fine. I have had to replace it once already, could not download ringtones. Not with the replacement phone, I can't even get to the website to try to download ringtones. Have had problems with getting a refund on my ringtones. Everytime I call a service rep, they promise 24 to 72 hours and nothing ever happens. Like I said, I paid a good price for the phone I got, but I can only use it like it is. Can't download ringtones, music or anything.

To Mykina Thank you for your interest in the touch screen phone of mine, but I will be keeping it. I love both phones (Samsung 451 & 810), that each month I will switch to the other one. It only takes 5-10 minutes to switch at the most each time I have done it. I will keep you in mind if I do decide to sell. I just wish someone could tell me how to stop my incoming calls from being dropped.

For a prepaid plan, it's not bad. I bought the phone for my 14 year old daughter thinking 1000 texts a month on the $30 plan would be plenty. Wrong!!! I'm going to have to refill it with the $45 plan w/ unlimited texts. I was really hoping to keep the cheaper plan but… She doesn't even begin to use the minutes. She's downloaded different ringtones with no problems from phonezoo. She has different ringtones for different people. Customer service does suck. I've had to call them a couple of times and I think if I hear one more time ‘Thank you for waiting, this will only take 1 minute' I will scream. It's makes me cranky.

Straight Talk is not for everyone, but it is definitely for me. 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts and 30 MB of web for $30/month?!?! Without a contract?!?!?! Yeah, the phones they offer aren't great, but they make calls (with fewer drops than I had with AT &T, so far), text fine, and allow me to check email. The major carriers require a $30/month data plan for all their smartphones which is insanity. You can get EVERYTHING for $30/month with Straight Talk. I had the minimum plan I could possibly get with AT &T (450 minutes w/ free nights and weekends, 200 texts, and no web) and it cost me over $50/month. Outrageous. It was easy to transfer my number…probably took less than an hour from when I called Straight Talk and asked them to switch it over to when I could use my new phone. Straight Talk's website is poor and you can't really do online account management, yet. However, you can check your balance to see how much you have left for the month. If your current contract is about to be up, you might as well give Straight Talk a shot for a month and see if you like it.

To Maria. Majority of my ringtones are from mytinyphone. I have the Samsung Qwerty. This is what I do. I click on the first Verizon for carrier, not the one with ‘2' after it. I check ‘send as a web link'. Once the text comes in, press open, press options, scroll down to number 7 called ‘extract' and then highlight the address that starts with ‘wap' and press ‘goto'. You will be prompted to open slider and it will download it for you and you press save. If you don't have the same phone as me, I don't know if the phone options will be the same, but it's always worked for me. Good luck.

I have been in # assignment hell. purchased phone $99 + unlimited service card 12/23/09. I activated the new phone and asked for a # in the 614 area code. I was assigned a 804 area code. Upon multiples calls and hours I've had 6 phone number assignements — all, except the original #, have been #s that were already in use. Go figure. The story is that they are out of #s with a 614 area code. Apparently when the computer assigns the number it can not distinguish between an available # versus one already in use. I am so frustruated with 1) communication english a 2nd language issue. 2) hold times are unblieveable. 3) agents do not seem to have a clue about technical support and 4) I would say there really isn't a legit manager available that knows what they are doing either.

I'm giving this one 0 stars. I had wrote a review earlier explaining my experience with activating the phone, which was horrible, had my phone being proted from as cingulair when it was net10, took days to get someone to actually cancel the port. Anyway now, it's even worse. The new number they gave me, is already an active number for someone elses' account at straightalk. They gave me someone else's number, whose phone is in use! Now, my phone doesn't work and they're telling me i will have to purchase another card to get a new number. OMG, beware!!!
