Overview
Locus Telecommunications boasts itself as being one of the largest prepaid cell phone MVNO's with over 300,000 customers and over 1,000 activations per day.
Based in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, Locus generates over 500 million network minutes per month and prides itself on being a reliable form of pay as you go cellular services.
Pros: Locus states that they offer free long distance within the 48 states as well as to 50 plus pre-selected countries making this a clear choice for users calling outside the states from their cell phone on a regular basis. You can also use your phone to load minutes and check your account balance. Additionally, Locus allows you to either purchase a phone from them or activate your own phone not bought from them if it is compatible with their service (which is GSM-based).
Cons: Locus has a confusing array of plans and none of the plans are clearly compared side by side with one another. They have confusing rates, as the first five minutes of talk time per day is billed at a different rate than the minutes used afterwards. Additionally, their per minute rates are a bit on the high side and the service offers no downloadables and have high directory assistance rates.

Plans: The Locus Mobile GSM plan has minutes starting at 15 cents per minute for the first five minutes of the day and then dropping down to nine cents a minute for the rest of the day. The CallPlus Wireless GSM plan offered by Locus offers minutes for 10 cents per minute with a 25 cent per day access fee. The O2 Wireless GSM plan offered by Locus has minutes for around 14 cents per minute. The POP by CallPlus Wireless GSM plan via Locus offers minutes for between 9 cents per minute and 14 cents per minute depending on denomination of airtime card purchased. Locus also offers two CDMA plans: Viva Prepaid Wireless with 18 cents per minute during the weekdays and 9 cents per minute for nights and weekends. The Locus Platinum plan has rates of 15 cents per minute. Note that with all plans your account will be deactivated if you do not have a balance for 30 days and incur a fee to reactivate it.
Customer Service: Customer service is available via phone, through an online customer care center and via email. They offer live representatives and additionally offer automated customer care services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Live customer service representatives can be reached from 9 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends (both on eastern standard time).

Payment Options: You can purchase your Locus wireless minutes at retailer locations, via phone or online. Minutes bought are automatically loaded to your phone without the need to use a PIN.
Text and Picture Messaging: Text messaging is available from Locus. The first text message you send or receive each day is billed at the standard rate of ten cents per minute. Each text message sent or received after that in the same day is billed at 5 cents per minute. Picture messaging is not available at this time.
Data Plans: Locus prepaid does not offer data services at this time.
Downloadables: Locus prepaid cell phone service does not offer any downloadables at this time.
International Calling: Locus offers a unique international calling service that allow you to call up to 50 plus pre-selected countries at no additional charge. Only regular airtime rates are applied to International calls when you use their special access number to make them. Note that if a subscriber of the service direct dials an International destination without inputting the special access code, they will be charged long distance rates for the destination they are calling in addition to the regular airtime costs.
Roaming Charges: Calls made while off Locus's network are charged at 49 cents per minute.
Calling Features: The prepaid plans offered by Locus include voicemail, call forwarding, 3 way calling, call waiting and caller ID at no extra charge.
Activation Fee: There is no activation fee to start service with Locus prepaid.
Nationwide Long Distance: Locus pay as you go wireless includes nationwide long distance so all calls made within the 48 states are treated as regular calls.
